stragglingla...

I went to law school for one year, but dropped out because I was trying to pay for a private school with loans and living on credit cards. I want to go back and finish, but, in the meantime, I have to find a job to (surprise!) make payments on the loans and credit cards I already have. And not only loans from law school, but undergrad as well.

So how can I work in a law office without any experience and no JD? I came up with the position of "legal secretary." That does exist, right? So I call almost every law office in this second largest city in Indiana--but my search is fruitless... I am really not sure what to do. I came across this site on The Frugal Law Student blog, and thought I would drop by. Nothing here, either.

I can't be the only one in my situation!

You don't want to be a legal secretary; it is a tough and thankless job. Lawyers pick secretaries that will take abuse and show up year after year (i.e., they don't want a lawyer in training).

The best non-attorney, non-experience jobs (i.e., not experienced for a marketing gig, office manager, tech guy, etc.) are the file clerks, runners, office services (copies/faxes) and the handyman (hangs pictures, buys beer for the parties, order's supplies, etc.). You could also see if someone will take you on as a paralegal. I would work your lawyer contacts to see if they can get you a runner or file clerk job. At least you'll get a taste of how miserable law firms are and go get a MBA degree instead.
