Nothing. A few firms paid a small signing bonus when a second year committed for the second summer, but that was rare and almost certainly not occurring today given the economic climate. Most firms pay some type of summer stipend to cover bar and moving expenses. A month's salary is typical. Some even cover moving and bar expenses and pay a month's salary on top of that. Some firms call it a signing bonus, but it is typically not paid out until the summer and must be repaid if you do not show up. Some firms require repayment if you don't work there a year.

Dear AB,

Thank you for this clear explanation. One last question if I might:

What is the typical signing bonus in the major cities for someone joining a major law firm? (I couldn't seem to find SB information on the website)

Thx!
