Nice site. Really well thought out and laid out. Great job!

Good site. My critical two cents:

1) I'm not too sure about the regional breakdown. New York, Chicago, LA, etc. merit their own categories. Plus, people interested in the non-NYC "Northeast" or the non-Chicago "Midwest," for instance, shouldn't have to slog through info and comments regarding the NYC or Chicago markets.

2) Some of the info for the major firms (number of attorneys, offices, etc.) is incorrect (e.g., I think Sidley has 17 offices and 1800 lawyers, and the Skadden numbers looked off as well, those being the only two I've looked at so far). You might want to send an email to the recruiting folks at all of the firms, most of whom would provide up to date info.

I retract my first comment above. I actually like how it offers first the region, then the city, then the firm.

Lots of your information is incorrect. You should correct it soon or you will lose all credibility fast!

Thank you for the suggestion. Please click on any firm name on any of the charts, which displays all information on the firm and provides a portal to submit corrections to the data (through the "submit corrections" link). The link is very user friendly and fast. We have processed several submitted corrections today and are committed to stay on top of it. We are also doing an internal audit and are seeking confirmation directly from the firms themselves.

Where do you get the information on firms? Some of this information is dead wrong. Look at Salt Lake City and you have two national firms that aren't even in the market anymore.

Also, med hours is for sure wrong for my firm (non-SLC).

It is nice to have this information, but not when it is inaccurate.

This is a beta launch and we are diligently working to improve both the site and the data. We only have 120 firms programed to date, but we plan to expand to 300 within a matter of months. Smaller markets like SLC, Denver and Portland will become more comprehensive as we add firms. Our programmer is working on fixes to the site to improve the ability to submit new firms and corrections (from us and our users).

We pull the information from several sources and from user submissions (we have already processed several), but principally from the firm's website.

Thanks for visiting the site and we promise to stick by our commitment to become the most current and comprehensive legal salary source.

Where are you getting the median billables figure from? I hope not NALP, because everyone knows it's bogus.

12/05/07 02:10 MST #34
Staj

Yeh, Williams and Connolly is definitely not a 2000 billable firm.

This is the most difficult variable to obtain. There is obviously no reliable source for this variable. Even if you nail it, everyone (including the firm itself) is going to say it is inaccurate. It would be impossible for us to nail this number on our own. We could employ 10 people full time gathering the data and still not get it 100% accurate. In short, we are relying on our users to a great degree to help us hone this variable.

We are rolling out explanations of our variables by next week. This variable is designed to represent the median (middle, not average) billables (not billed) for a full time (not part time) associate a the firm (not an individual office) on a rolling 3-5 year period (the average of the median for the last 3-5 years, not last year's stated average billable).

We debated not including the variable, but it is useful to the extent you can get it or even get close to it, especially for showing firms at the extremes on both ends. Just last night, we replaced all data in this category above 2000 (2300, 2200, etc.) with 2000. It will be up to our users (and we will continue to attempt to independently verify the data with the firm and its associates) to help us refine this variable on a firm-by-firm basis.

12/4 at 4:54: Check out SL now. We have spent two days combing the available data and talking to inside sources. We will continue to fine tune as our sources submit date, but we are confident that we now have the most accurate and comprehensive data on SLC available free on the web.

Latham Assoc...

I work at Latham and they provide us the hours by office and practice group. In DC last year, average billables for all attorneys was 2048. NYC was roughly the same. There are people who bill 2900 and there are people who bill 1900. The average attorney, both the mean and the median bills 2050 a year. I billed 1980 last year and received a full bonus.

Latham Assoc...

Every Latham associate can run reports on hours by office and practice area. It is pretty sweet. Just ask a friend who works there. I worry that publishing it on here will cause our access to be cut off.

It really isn't as bad at Latham as you here. Like I said, some associates work 2900 hours, but they are the freaks. The average associate bills between 2000 to 2100 hours.

Could one of the 1,000 or so Latham associates run the report and post it?

Awesome; thanks for the data. After entering the largest firms, we're moving across the country, market by market, to add to and improve our data. We are adding any firm with more than 30 attorneys (50 in larger markets) and available salary info. We have finished NY, DC, IL, TX and SLC and are currently working on CA and GA. We should have most of the markets flushed out by the end of March. We'll hit PA and NC next based on user demand. We greatly appreciate the corrections and submissions and the input.
